PLAN B
Do you know that the famous Plan B One-Step/Levonorgestrel morning -after pill is an emergency contraceptive that helps prevent pregnancy when taken within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex or birth control failure. If taken within 24 hours, the efficacy rate is higher than when taken later. It is available without a prescription in drugstores and pharmacies. Plan B should not be used as regular birth control and is also not an abortion pill. It certainly does not cause abortion or miscarriage, so it will not work if taken when you are already pregnant. It also does not protect against STDs. It works by preventing or delaying ovulation or by interfering with the fertilization of an egg. Research shows that Plan B is generally safe and has no long term side effects or complications, but some people may experience short term nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, menstrual changes, dizziness, and breast tenderness. Lastly, Plan B may be less effective if you weigh 155 pounds or more.
Talk to your provider to see if Plan B is right for you.
