Are you someone that tends to follow the crowd in whatever is trending without actually researching the benefits and risks of things? If yes, this post is for you, so read on. Before I go on, please don’t beat yourself up, most of us do things based on what’s in vogue. Getting ourselves educated and well informed is vital so that we can make better and wiser health decisions.
There have been talks and discussions about vaginal aka yoni steaming. This is a practice that involves a female sitting over a pot hot or boiling liquid infused with herbs and allowing the steam to work on your genitals/vagina. This is done with the intent of cleansing out impurities, regulating cycles, or improving fertility.
Okay so, are there any benefits or risks associated with this?
According to research, there are no proven benefits to steaming your vagina. Your vagina is self- cleansing and needs little to no help in maintaining this cleanliness. Simple warm water and mild soap should do the trick. Steaming your vagina can be dangerous and unwarranted. High temperatures from the steaming could actually cause an imbalance of the good bacteria that help to fight infections and increase vulnerability to bacteria and yeast infections. Also, you can end up burning or scalding yourself in the process. It has also been said that there is little chance that the steam would be able to penetrate the vagina tissues well to be that effective.
My recommendation:
If you are concerned about your vaginal health, have an unpleasant odor, or abnormal vaginal discharge, please consult with your health care provider or gynecologist rather than follow groundless trends on the internet which can put your health at risk. Just because some trends have been in existence since ancient days or are cultural, this does not mean they are ideal.
